El Gat de den Ham es un creek al este de Lage Zwaluwe que pertenece a un sistema que se formó durante la inundación de Santa Isabel de 1421, y se desarrolló de manera análoga al actual Biesbosch. Todo el sistema fue llamado entonces: Gat de den Ham y abarcaba aproximadamente 750 ha.
Se comenzó a finales del siglo XVI con la reforestación de esta área. En 1645 se estableció la Polder Emiliapolder, luego la Polder Royale y la Polder Nueva Zwaluwse. A partir de 1750 se añadieron varios polder más: Polder Koekoek y Polder Oudgors. Después de 1850 siguieron: Polder Den Bol y Polder Volharding. Así se formó un conjunto de pequeños polder y también había la zona de los creek con bosques ribereños y marismas de juncos. Una gran parte del área no tenía habitantes permanentes.
