Das Gat van den Ham ist ein Bach östlich von Lage Zwaluwe, der zu einem System gehört, das während der Sint-Elisabethsvloed von 1421 entstanden ist, und sich analog zur heutigen Biesbosch entwickelte. Das gesamte System wurde damals Gat van den Ham genannt und umfasste etwa 750 ha.
In der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts begann man mit der erneuten Eindeichung dieses Gebiets. 1645 entstand die Emiliapolder, gefolgt von der Royale Polder und der Nieuwe Zwaluwse Polder. Ab 1750 wurden noch einige Polder hinzugefügt: Koekoekpolder und Polder Oudgors. Nach 1850 folgten: Polder Den Bol und Polder Volharding. So entstand ein Ensemble aus kleinen Poldern und es gab auch das Gebiet mit Bachwäldern und Schilfmooren. Ein großer Teil des Gebiets hatte keine permanente Besiedlung.
