Área natural de la Rucphense heide.
En el pasado, grandes partes del municipio de Rucphen estaban cubiertas con capas de turba, que eran pantanosas e inaccesibles.
Determinante para la explotación y el desarrollo del área fue la extracción de turba.
Más tarde, en la Edad Media, había una gran demanda de combustible de turba.
Esto dio lugar a una industria de turba y West-Brabante fue una de las primeras áreas en el noroeste de Europa donde se comenzó a extraer turba de manera comercial.
Después de 1700, gradualmente llegó a su fin la industria de la turba.
En los antiguos lugares de extracción de turba se establecieron bosques de producción y fincas.
