El Fuerte de Edam, como se le llama oficialmente, fue construido a principios del siglo XX como la parte más al noreste de la Línea de Defensa de Ámsterdam. La tarea principal del Fuerte de Edam era proteger la región de Ámsterdam contra ataques enemigos desde el norte. Un componente esencial de esa defensa también era inundar la zona de pólderes al norte de Edam.
