Het Fort bij Edam, zoals het officieel heet, is in het begin van de twintigste eeuw gebouwd als het meest noordoostelijk gelegen onderdeel van de Stelling van Amsterdam. Hoofdtaak van het Fort bij Edam was de bescherming van de regio Amsterdam tegen vijandelijke aanvallen vanuit het noorden. Essentieel onderdeel van die verdediging was tevens het onderwater zetten (inunderen) van het poldergebied ten noorden van Edam.
