El Bosque de Ámsterdam se encuentra casi completamente en el municipio de Amstelveen. La parte al sur de la autopista A9 pertenecía hasta 2002 al municipio de Aalsmeer, pero desde entonces el límite municipal entre Amstelveen y Aalsmeer se encuentra en Bosrandweg. El municipio de Ámsterdam es propietario y gestor del bosque.
El inspirador del Bosque de Ámsterdam fue Jac. P. Thijsse. Ya en 1900 se preocupaba por el verdor alrededor de la ciudad. En su obra indicó que el área al sur del Nieuwe Meer era muy adecuada para la creación de un bosque.
