Se encuentra al noreste de Rijs y al norte de Oudemirdum, de la cual forma parte formalmente. Schouw está situada en los bosques de Gaasterland y en el lado sur del foso de arena y la reserva natural de Wyldemerk, que también se conoce como Schouw. La aldea se originó en el lugar donde se encuentran el Spookhoekstervaart y el Van Swinderenvaart. En 1844, había una casa cerca del transbordador, y de allí se originó la aldea. Schouw es otro término para un ferry de cruce, y de ahí proviene también el nombre del lugar. En 2018, la aldea consta de cuatro casas, que en su momento fueron cinco.
