Es liegt nordöstlich von Rijs und nördlich von Oudemirdum, wozu es formell gehört. Schouw liegt an den Gaasterlandse Wäldern und an der Südseite des Sandgruben- und Naturschutzgebiets de Wyldemerk, das auch Schouw genannt wird. Die Siedlung ist an dem Ort entstanden, an dem der Spookhoekstervaart und der Van Swinderenvaart zusammenfließen. Im Jahr 1844 gab es ein Haus bei der Fähre, und daraus ist die Siedlung entstanden. Schouw ist ein anderer Begriff für eine Fähre, und davon ist auch der Ortsname abgeleitet. Im Jahr 2018 besteht die Siedlung aus vier Häusern, vor einiger Zeit waren es fünf.
