La fortaleza de Valença data de finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII. Su finalidad era defender la ciudad y el paso del río.
En el marco de la Guerra de Restauración por la Independencia de Portugal, este fuerte vecino fue completamente renovado a partir del siglo XVII según un diseño del francés Miguel de l'Ècole.
De esta manera se reconstruyeron las murallas y se levantaron nuevas estructuras abaluartadas, entre ellas:
- la llamada Coroada , con tres baluartes (Santa Ana, São Jerônimo y Santa Bárbara) y dos medios baluartes (São José y Santo Antônio);
Se abrieron nuevas zanjas, sobre las que se construyeron diques de alivio;
- revellines para defender unas cortinas
- siete nuevos bastiones , a saber: Carmo, Esperança, Faro, Lapa, São Francisco, São João y Socorro.
