El palacio fue construido en el siglo XV y mejorado en el XVI.
Este palacio, construido sobre una de las puertas rocosas de la ciudad, de ahí el nombre de "porta do paço dos viscondes", es un bello edificio del siglo XVI. La fachada, de curva ligera y elegante, está flanqueada por dos torres cuadradas con almenas , tiene una hermosa puerta y dos grandes ventanales manuelinos.
Tras la muerte del último marqués de Ponte de Lima, el palacio del vizconde fue vendido a un sastre local.
En 1906 el edificio fue legado a la Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ponte de Lima para que se pudiese instalar un nuevo hospital , lo que no ocurrió hasta 1927.
Entre 1970 y 1980 fue adquirido por el Ayuntamiento de Ponte de Lima para instalar la Escuela Técnica de Ponte de Lima .
Tras ser restaurado a partir de 2003 , pasó a ser sede de la delegación turística y centro de exposiciones del municipio. Actualmente alberga un núcleo museístico, el Núcleo Museológico dos Paços do Marquês.
