La batalla del río Kalka se libró el 31 de mayo de 1223 entre las fuerzas del Imperio mongol y una alianza de principados de la Rus de Kiev, Galitzia-Volynia, entre otros, y los cumanos. La batalla se desarrolló a orillas del río Kalka y terminó en una aplastante victoria mongola.
En 1220, Gengis Kan había conquistado ya varias plazas fuertes, entre ellas Samarcanda, en Asia Central, pero en su afán de conquistas encontró un rival de altura en la persona del sah de Corasmia Muhammad II.
