Le lieu Ferndorf est situé dans la vallée inférieure de la Drave entre Spittal an der Drau et Villach. La limite communale au sud-ouest est formée par la Drave à une altitude d'un peu plus de 500 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer. À l'est-nord-est, le terrain monte vers une crête boisée qui sépare la vallée de la Drave du lac de Millstatt. Dans la dépression qui suit, le Gschrietbach s'écoule, se jetant dans la partie orientale du lac de Millstatt. Ensuite, le territoire communal s'élève davantage vers les Nockberge. La plus haute montagne est le Bodeneck avec 2006 mètres d'altitude.
