La gare principale de Wels est un point de transit en Haute-Autriche. Elle est le point de départ de la ligne de train Wels–Passau vers la gare principale de Passau et de la ligne de chemin de fer d'Almtal vers Grünau dans la vallée d'Almtal, qui se détachent ici de la Westbahn.
Dans le cadre de l'« offensive des gares », la gare principale de Wels a été complètement rénovée et remise à son usage fin 2005.
