Elle se situe dans la haute vallée de Timmeltal, dans la commune de Prägraten en Haute-Tyrol, à une altitude de 2521 m d'altitude, légèrement en dehors du parc national des Hohe Tauern. Un peu moins d'une heure au nord du refuge se trouve, derrière un mur, le lac de glace à 2664 m d'altitude. Le refuge a été construit en 1980 et propose au total 45 places de couchage. Il est le point de départ de dix sommets de plus de trois mille mètres.
