Cette église impressionnante et son clocher ont été construits entre 1524 et 1546 à la demande du comte Antoine de Lalaing et de la comtesse Élisabeth de Culemborg. Rombout Keldermans, l'un des architectes de la cathédrale d'Anvers, a dessiné les plans. L'église, avec son clocher haut de 104,70 mètres, mesure 80 mètres de long et est souvent appelée la 'triomphe des briques’.
