En 1967, Jules et Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens donnent pour mission à l’architecte Erik Van Biervliet de construire un bâtiment moderne à côté de leur maison. Ils veulent y abriter leur collection d’œuvres d’art, mais le lieu doit aussi pouvoir accueillir des activités culturelles et artistiques.
Depuis, le bâtiment est devenu un musée où d’importantes collections privées d’art moderne et contemporain sont présentées au public, ainsi qu’un centre culturel jouant un rôle important dans le milieu de l’art international.
