Kermt est entré dans les livres d'histoire car c'est ici qu'en 1831 la Bataille de Kermt a été combattue pendant la Campagne de Dix Jours, un conflit entre la jeune Belgique et l'armée néerlandaise avide de revanche. La bataille a eu lieu près de l'abbaye de Herkenrode.
