Le nom Julémont est dérivé de Mons Julius, « la montagne de Jules (César) ». Selon une histoire, sur laquelle les historiens ne sont pas d’accord, Jules César aurait campé ici, car il a été retenu par Ambiorix pendant un hiver. Après cet hiver, des renforts arrivèrent de Rome, après quoi Ambiorix fut vaincu sur la rivière Berwinne, à l’endroit où se trouve aujourd’hui le village de Mortroux, qui signifie « trou des morts ».
