The name Julémont is derived from Mons Julius, "the mountain of Julius (Caesar)." According to a story, which historians do not agree on, Julius Caesar is said to have camped here because he was held back by Ambiorix one winter. After that winter, reinforcements came from Rome, after which Ambiorix was defeated by the Berwinne River, at the site where the village of Mortroux is now located, a name that means "hole of the dead."
