Le canal de Stekense a été creusé en 1315. Il reliait Gand à Hulst. Le cours d'eau a joué un rôle important au 16ème et 17ème siècle dans le transport de pierres et de tuiles. Celles-ci étaient fabriquées dans les nombreuses carrières de pierres et de tuiles qui étaient alors actives. Il a conservé sa fonction économique jusqu'au 20ème siècle.
