Der Stekense Vaart wurde 1315 gegraben. Er verband Gent mit Hulst. Der Wasserlauf spielte im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert eine wichtige Rolle beim Transport von Steinen und Ticheln. Diese wurden in den zahlreichen Stein- und Tichelbrennereien produziert, die damals aktiv waren. Er behielt seine wirtschaftliche Funktion bis ins 20. Jahrhundert.
