Le moulin de Tuyl est situé à environ 700 m à l'ouest de l'ancienne abbaye cistercienne de Herkenrode à Kuringen-Hasselt, sur la Tuilterdemer, qui rejoint plus à l’ouest la Demer. Au sud se trouve l’autoroute Anvers-Liège et à l'ouest une partie supprimée de la Stokrooieweg.
Le moulin de Tuilt était déjà mentionné comme moulin de ban dans un acte de 1083. Les habitants de Tuilt étaient obligés de faire moudre leur grain dans ce moulin, qui fut donné en 1213 par le comte Louis II de Loon à l'abbaye de Herkenrode. Le moulin et le territoire environnant étaient probablement utilisés auparavant par un certain Tegnon, vassal du comte.
