En 1855, une chapelle en paille se tenait à Houthulst. Celle-ci a été construite à l'initiative de la famille Cassiers. En 1857, Houthulst est devenue une paroisse. Un an plus tard, la construction de l'église a commencé. Après la Première Guerre mondiale, l'église a été complètement détruite, puis a été reconstruite en 1921-’22 dans un style néo-romain, mais maintenant à un autre endroit à cause du plan d'assainissement. L'architecte de l'église était le même que celui de la maison communale, Joseph Viérin. Il a créé un grand espace unique de 41 sur 11 mètres et un transept où se trouvent 2 autels latéraux.
