À la fin du XVIIe siècle, le roi français Louis XIV convoite le pouvoir dans les Pays-Bas. Il se heurte à une vive résistance. Le résultat est la guerre franco-hollandaise, mais la Flandre est également entraînée dans le conflit. Le marquis espagnol de Bedmar construit une vaste ligne défensive de Knokke à Kallo. Le nom de 'Camping Fort Bedmar' révèle qu'il y avait autrefois un fort ici. Aujourd'hui, seule une partie du rempart nord-ouest est encore visible. Des bandes de pavés sur la route indiquent les emplacements des anciens fossés. Non loin du fort Bedmar se trouve le 'Quartier espagnol'. Ce petit hameau de Sint-Gillis-Waas rappelle un fort espagnol qui se tenait ici pendant la guerre de Quatre-Vingts Ans, en défense contre les États.
