À l'origine de ce imposant cimetière du Commonwealth se trouve l'hôpital de guerre britannique qui était situé en 1944 - 1945 dans l'institut du Sacré-Cœur. Les 50 personnes qui y sont décédées de leurs blessures ont été enterrées à l'origine sur le domaine de l'institut. En 1946, le cimetière a été transféré à son emplacement actuel. Au total, 1018 soldats y sont maintenant enterrés, dont 981 identifiés. Il s'agit de victimes d'opérations terrestres et d'équipages aériens qui sont tombés autour de Louvain. Il y a également 29 tombes de la Première Guerre mondiale, transférées d'autres cimetières.
