Derrière le comptoir du Hotsy Totsy se tenait la mère maquerelle la plus légendaire de toute la ville : Motte Claus ! Cette dame, qui dirigeait également la Maison des Gueux, était la belle-sœur d'Hugo Claus, l'âme du Hotsy Totsy et un modèle à plein temps pour de nombreuses jeunes femmes de Gand. De nombreux Gantois célèbres sont venus et continuent à venir ici. Jan Hoet en fait partie.
