La grande ferme, le futur 'Hof te Vlierzele', a été fondée au 6ème siècle dans la terre inexploitée à la frontière ouest de la commune actuelle, probablement comme centre d'élevage, et ensuite offerte par un certain Morbertus à l'abbaye Saint-Bavon de Gand. L'abbaye s'est immédiatement engagée à valoriser ce bien et il est probable que grâce à ce développement, qui s'est probablement réalisé sous la direction directe d'un moine, des serfs ont été établis à côté de la ferme, qu'une église a été construite et que la Kruiskouter au sud du 'Hof te Vlierzele' a été défrichée.
