De grote hoeve, het latere 'Hof te Vlierzele', werd in de 6de eeuw in het onontgonnen land aan de westgrens van de tegenwoordige gemeente, wellicht als veeteeltcentrum opgericht en nadien door een zekere Morbertus aan de Sint-Baafsabdij te Gent geschonken. De abdij heeft zich onmiddellijk ingespannen om dit bezit te valoriseren en het is waarschijnlijk dank zij deze uitbouw, die wellicht onder de directe leiding van een monnik geschiedde, dat horigen naast het hof werden gevestigd, dat een kerk werd gebouwd en dat de Kruiskouter ten zuiden van het 'Hof te Vlierzele' werd ontgonnen.
