Dans la partie sud-ouest de Zonhoven, le long de ligne de chemin de fer Hasselt-Mol, se trouve la réserve naturelle des Platwijers. La zone fait environ 100 ha.
Les Platwijers se composent principalement d'étangs à poissons aménagés et de prairies. L'arrivée d'eau enrichie de nombreuses matières nutritives n'a pas été bénéfique pour la flore riche. En effet, nous assistons à une augmentation de l'envahissement de la végétation.
Cependant, cette réserve est surtout connue pour sa grande richesse ornithologique. De nombreuses espèces y trouvent un endroit approprié pour se reposer et nicher. La plupart des petits sentiers sont donc fermés au public car autrement les oiseaux seraient trop dérangés.
