Dans le pré à gauche du Kwachtloop, les habitants des hameaux de Heikant et Gebergte s'étaient retranchés pour échapper aux armées en mouvement aux 17e et 18e siècles. Pendant cette période, la guerre était presque constante. Les villageois sans défense se retiraient dans des zones plus basses entourées d'eau. Le fort était souvent protégé par un pont-levis. Pendant cette période tumultueuse, Meerhout comptait pas moins de 8 forts. Le fort de Heikant, en raison de sa situation dans une zone marécageuse, était très efficace. La première description date de 1683.
