On the meadow to the left of the Kwachtloop, the residents of the hamlets Heikant and Gebergte took refuge from invading armies in the 17th and 18th centuries. During this period, war was almost constantly waged. Defenseless villagers retreated to low-lying areas surrounded by water. The fort was often protected by a drawbridge. Meerhout counted no less than 8 forts during this tumultuous period. The Heikant fort was very effective due to its location in marshy terrain. The first description dates back to 1683.
