Elle est située dans un vallon du massif du Jura, sur le cours de l'Orbe, entouré notamment par la chaîne de la Dent de Vaulion et par celle du Mont d'Or.
Vallorbe, dont l'existence est attestée depuis le XIIe siècle, s'est notamment faite connaître par sa longue tradition industrielle dans le domaine de la métallurgie - forges, clous, chaînes, limes, etc. - ainsi que par sa gare internationale où le Simplon-Orient-Express et le TGV ont fait ou font encore halte.
