Morat est une localité et une commune suisse du canton de Fribourg, située dans le district du Lac, dont elle est le chef-lieu.
L'emplacement est mentionné en 515 sous le nom Moritum. Déjà du temps des Romains la région était bien peuplée, située au bord d’un axe de communication nord-sud reliant Rome à la Germanie par le col du Grand-Saint-Bernard, d'Aventicum à Solodurum et Windisch, et leur jonction vers Augusta Raurica à travers les Gorges du Taubenloch, et passant par le Col de Pierre Pertuis.
