Niedersteinmaur est la seule communauté constitutive limitrophe de toutes les autres communautés constitutives, à savoir au sud-est sur le quartier Schiebler, au nord sur Obersteinmaur et au nord-ouest sur Sünikon. Au sud, Niedersteinmaur est limitrophe de Ratisberg et donc du Lägern. Le district a une superficie d’environ 4 kilomètres carrés, dont environ un demi-kilomètre carré est habité et le reste est utilisé pour l’agriculture.
Niedersteinmaur abrite la gare de Steinmaur, desservie par le Wehntalbahn avec la S 15 toutes les demi-heures, ainsi que les arrêts de bus Bahnhof et Gemeindehaus, desservis par les lignes 535 Oberglatt–Dielsdorf–Steinmaur–Bachs–Stadel–Neerach–Hochfelden–Bülach.
