La petite ville de Winterberg (droit de cité en 1270) est située profondément dans le Sauerland et bénéficie d'une position unique entre les plus hautes montagnes. Vous y trouverez l'Altastenberg, le Neuastenberg et la plus haute, le Kahler Asten (841 m) où la Ruhr et la Lenne prennent leur source. Grâce à cette position unique et au climat de moyenne montagne, Winterberg a le droit de porter le titre de 'Heilklimatologisches Kurort'. Comme il n'y a pas d'industrie à proximité, vous y trouverez un air relativement pur qui semble avoir des effets curatifs sur les nerfs et le cœur. En été, Winterberg est beaucoup plus calme qu'en hiver et est attrayant pour les randonneurs, les vététistes et bien sûr les touristes.
