The town of Winterberg (city rights in 1270) is located deep in the Sauerland and has a unique location between the highest mountains. You will find the Altastenberg, the Neuastenberg and the highest, the Kahler Asten (841m) where the Ruhr and the Lenne have their source. Because of this unique location and the low mountain climate, Winterberg may bear the name Heilklimatologisches Kurort'. Because there is no industry in the area, you will find a relatively clean air which seems to have a healing effect on nerve and heart ailments. In the summer it is a lot quieter in Winterberg than in the winter months and attractive for the hiker, the mountain biker and of course the tourer
