Bâtie en 1230, la Nikolaikirche, église Saint-Nicolas, est le plus ancien édifice de Berlin. Elle est actuellement érigée au centre du quartier historique de Nikolaiviertel. Église romane à l'origine, elle fut bâtie en l'honneur de saint Nicolas, le saint-patron des commerçants, car une grande partie des premiers Berlinois appartenaient à cette corporation. L'édifice fut remanié à plusieurs reprises pour recevoir en 1380 son chœur gothique, et en 1480 ses nefs typiques d'église-halle.
