Hombourg est une ville universitaire sarroise, située dans l'est de la Sarre. Elle est le chef-lieu du district de Sarre-Palatinat. Elle est la troisième grande ville du Land de Sarre après Sarrebruck et Neunkirchen.
L'histoire de la ville commence déjà par un village romain. Au Moyen Âge, les ducs de Palatinat-Deux-Ponts y construisent un fort du nom de Hohenburg, qui est à l'origine du nom actuel de la ville.
