Marl est située dans le parc naturel de Dümmer, non loin du Dümmer, entre Osnabrück et Brême. La commune fait partie de la communauté de communes de l'ancien bureau de Lemförde, qui a son siège administratif dans le hameau de Lemförde. La situation est, à part la partie de la commune située près de la Hunte, à 39 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer, ce qui est élevé par rapport à l'environnement, comme le représente également la colline jaune du blason de Marl, qui symbolise la hauteur de Marl.
