Marl ligger i Naturpark Dümmer nær Dümmer mellem Osnabrück og Bremen. Kommunen tilhører den fælleskommune Altes Amt Lemförde, der har sin administrationssæde i byen Lemförde. Beliggenheden er, bortset fra den del af kommunen, der ligger nær Hunte, placeret højt med 39 meter over havets overflade sammenlignet med omgivelserne, hvilket også illustreres af den gule lavere bakke på Marler våbenskjoldet, der symboliserer Marler Højde.
