Nierstein est une ville de l'arrondissement de Mayence-Bingen, dans le Land de Rhénanie-Palatinat .
Il semble avoir existé dans l'antiquité sur ce site une ville gallo-romaine nommée Bonconica ; Buconica ; Buconice ou Bauconica Nova. Certains auteurs ont supposé qu'il pouvait y avoir un lien entre le nom de cette ville et celui de la forêt de Buconia cité dans des textes du Haut Moyen Âge ou postérieurs, citant eux-mêmes des textes antiques.
