Kahler Asten est certainement la montagne la plus connue de la Sauerland, mais elle n'est pas tout à fait la plus haute. Le Kahler Asten mesure 842 m de haut et se situe entre les villages d'Alt- et Neuastenberg. Il arrive souvent que le Kahler Asten soit à tort considéré comme la plus haute montagne de la Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie. Cependant, c'est le Langenberg, situé à la frontière avec le Hesse. Sur le Kahler Asten se trouve une station météorologique et une tour d'observation. Autour de la montagne, il existe de nombreuses possibilités de sports d'hiver.
