Le barrage d’Olef est situé à proximité du parc national de l’Eifel, près de Hellenthal, dans le parc naturel des Hautes Fagnes-Eifel, dans le comté d’Euskirchen, dans le Land allemand de Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie. Son réservoir stocke environ 20 millions de mètres cubes et est alimenté par la rivière Olef.
Le barrage d’Olef a été construit entre 1954 et 1959 dans deux buts: protéger les municipalités environnantes des inondations; et l’approvisionnement en eau potable. En 1965, la vallée a été complètement remplie d’eau pour la première fois et le barrage a été officiellement ouvert. Il y a eu deux phases de construction ultérieures pour le renforcer: 1962-1965 et 1982-1986. Le barrage est en béton et est du type contrefort et est unique en Allemagne.
