Le lundi de Pentecôte, le 26 mai 1828, un garçon de 16 ans en état de délabrement est apparu sur la place Unschlitt. C'était un enfant trouvé allemand d'origine incertaine, devenu l'un des plus grands mystères de son siècle. Il portait des vêtements de paysan et était à peine capable de parler. Il ne comprenait presque rien. Il a été amené au poste de police, où, à la surprise générale, il a pu écrire son nom : Kaspar Hauser. Il avait passé toute sa vie dans un refuge pour animaux et n'avait jamais rencontré son soigneur. La seule chose qu'il acceptait était de l'eau et du pain.
