Op pinkstermaandag 26 mei 1828 dook een verwaarloosde 16-jarige jongen op op de Unschlittplatz. Het was een Duitse vondeling van onduidelijke afkomst, die uitgroeide tot een van de meest formidabele raadsels van zijn eeuw. Hij droeg boerenkledij en kon nauwelijks spreken. Hij begreep amper iets. Hij werd naar een politiebureau genomen waar hij tot ieders verbazing zijn naam kon schrijven: Kaspar Hauser. Hij had heel zijn leven in een schuilplaats doorgebracht en nooit zijn bewaker gezien. Het enige dat hij toeliet was water en brood.
