Du château d’origine, seules la tour Bergfried et une partie adjacente de l’ancien mur d’enceinte survivent. Le château a été fondé par Nicolas Ier de Werle au milieu du 13ème siècle, pour protéger la ville de Wesenberg. Entre autres choses, le château servait de résidence à la veuve du duc Ulrich II de Mecklembourg-Stargard, Catherine. Le château a été en grande partie détruit par un incendie en 1630. Aujourd’hui, le château appartient à la ville de Wesenberg et abrite depuis 1950 les bureaux de l’administration forestière locale.
