La brasserie Rothaus a été fondée en 1791 par l’abbé de Saint-Blasien, Martin Gerbert, dans le but d’encourager la croissance économique de la Forêt-Noire. En raison de la sécularisation, il a finalement changé de mains. En 1806, il devient la propriété du Grand-Duché de Bade. Le nom « Rothaus, brasserie d’État de Baden » est utilisé depuis l’abolition de la monarchie en 1918. Et c’est toujours le nom à ce jour. Mais aujourd’hui, la brasserie est entièrement détenue par le Land de Bade-Wurtemberg.
