De brouwerij Rothaus werd in 1791 opgericht door de abt van St. Blasien Martin Gerbert als een maatregel om de economische groei in het Zwarte Woud aan te moedigen. Door secularisatie veranderde het uiteindelijk van eigenaar. In 1806 werd het eigendeom van het Groothertogdom van Baden. De naam "Rothaus, Staatsbrouwerij van Baden" is in gebruik sinds de afschaffing van de monarchie in 1918. En dat is nog steeds de naam tot vandaag. Maar nu is de brouwerij de volle eigendom van de deelstaat Baden-Württemberg.
