La forêt pétrifiée de Chemnitz est un site fossilifère paléobotanique important. Les pièces exposées au musée d'histoire naturelle de Chemnitz font partie des attractions de la ville.
Déjà en 1546, le maire de Chemnitz et érudit Georgius Agricola parle dans son œuvre De natura fossilium de troncs de nombreux arbres qui ont été transformés en pierre et il évoque également le tuff de l'arbre Zeisig comme matériau de construction.
