Le peintre Jan Van Eyck est venu à Santiago de Compostelle lors de son voyage au Portugal en 1429. Il faisait partie d'une délégation bourguignonne. Officiellement, il est venu au Portugal pour peindre un portrait de la princesse Isabelle de Portugal. L'objectif final était de créer une alliance entre la Bourgogne et le Portugal par le biais d'un mariage entre Philippe le Bon et Isabelle. Jan Van Eyck a participé aux négociations pour le contrat de mariage.
